WCECW299 Outdoor Learning – Launching a Biodiversity Champion Challenge

Throughout the pandemic, many of us have turned to nature for solace and respite.  The benefits of spending time in nature and horticultural therapy are well documented in the scientific literature.  This webinar explains how you can launch a Biodiversity Champion Challenge in your school to improve wellbeing.  This is a challenge that students undertake in their own gardens and community spaces.  It can be launched before the school term ends and it can run over the summer period.  The model was created in Ardscoil na Mara this year and launched by the senior leadership team

The challenge is also an opportunity to engage your students and their families with the climate crisis and loss of nature, something that can feel somewhat intangible.  This project is a simple way to empower students and their families to take action.  Across Europe pollinating insects have declined by over 70%.  In this seminar we will discuss what’s happening with nature and what we can do about it.

100% of participants attending this webinar strongly agreed that they found the webinar enjoyable and useful. When asked how they felt at the end of the webinar the participants wrote ‘feeling inspired', 'invigorated with ideas', 'enthused', and 'motivated'.

Participants will:

  • Know how to improve wellbeing of their pupils by engaging them in outdoor learning.
  • Know what’s happening with nature and how we can help.
  • Know how to launch their own biodiversity champion challenge.
