2022
Dear Principal,
Once again it is time for Scríobh Leabhar applications.
We are delighted that funds are available for this project again this year and wish to acknowledge the generous support from Foras na Gaeilge.
I have attached the letter with details of the project as well as an application form for you to complete and return to us here at the centre. A scanned and emailed version of the form will suffice. Please put Scríobh Leabhar Application in the subject line of the email. The address is This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
It is important to let us know how many books the students intend to write and how many students will be involved as the prizes and certificates will be based on this number.
It is hoped that a public Showcase of the books can take place later in the year and if this is possible, we will be in contact with the details in due course. In the meantime we will provide the prizes and certs to each school involved and an awards ceremony can take place in your own classrooms.
The project has been very successful in West Cork to date and we hope that you will once again engage with us to make it a success again, even if, unfortunately, it has to be in slightly different circumstances this year.
CLOSING DATE: Wednesday, January 26th, 2022.
2020
West Cork Education Support Centre is pleased to announce that we have been able to secure funding to offer the Scríobh Leabhar Project to schools again this year. This project, which is offered in collaboration with Foras na Gaeilge has been a huge success in the past years.
Pupils of any primary school class have the opportunity to write and create their own books (trí Ghaeilge). Each year, West Cork Education Support Centre hosts a Taispeantas in conjunction with Seachtain na Gaeilge where each pupil’s book is displayed. Schools are invited to come and view the books while also listening to stories being read by a storyteller and seanchaí. Details and dates for this Taispeantas will issue in due course.
Schools are now invited to register their interest in this project .
If you would like to be part of this exciting and innovative project, please complete the attached application form and return it to West Cork Education Support Centre by Wednesday, February 5th 2020

1,028 Children in West Cork compose books ‘as Gaeilge’
The West Cork Education Centre’s ‘Scríobh Leabhar’ event held recently in Dunmanway in conjunctionwith Seachtain na Gaeilge, attracted over 1,000
young writers from primary schools across West Cork. This year’s event welcomed the largest number of participating schools and children since the early beginnings of this initiative.
Students who composed, designed and published their own books in Irish were recognised for their endeavours at this four day storytelling event organised by the West Cork Education Centre and facilitated by retired primary school teacher Mr Noel Coakley, a fluent Irish speaker himself and a ‘Scéalaí’ in his own right who is a strong advocate for the importance of story and story-telling. Noel was joined this year by Art Ó Súilleabháin, a teacher and writer of children’s books as Gaeilge and in English from Corr na Móna in the North Connemara Gaeltacht.
Scríobh Leabhar doesn’t just involve children. Teachers are also offered a training workshop to help them support the children in publishing their books. This training helps teachers devise strategies to motivate and inspire children’s Irish language writing.
The ‘Scriobh Leabhar’ project is managed in conjunction with Foras na Gaeilge.
Mary O’Donovan, Director of the West Cork Education Centre expressed her delighted with the number of schools and children participating in such a worthwhile initiative in support of Irish Language Development. She said that it was encouraging to listen to the children as they read their stories with such pride and confidence. This contributes to a development of competence and confidence in the Irish Language at a very young age. She expressed thanks to Foras na Gaeilge for their tremendous support over the years and in particular to the schools of West Cork who commit their time and efforts to the ‘Scriobh Leabhar’ annual event.
2014
531 pupils visited West Cork Education Centre for the Scriobh Leabhar Exhibition in March in conjunction with Seachtain na Gaeilge.
405 books, written by West Cork pupils were on display and a number of these books can now be viewed on www.scriobhleabhar.ie, a designated Scriobh Leabhar website funding by Foras na Gaeilge.
Congratulations to all schools who have participated in this project over the years
