National Arts in Education Portal

The Arts in Education Portal was one of the objectives of the Arts in Education Charter – signed December 2012 by the Minister for Education and Skills and the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. A major objective in the Arts in Education Charter, was the establishment of a National Arts in Education Online Portal for arts education in Ireland (4.12).  The Charter Implementation Group, established by both Ministers in 2013, has given detailed attention to the planning and design of such a portal. With the appreciated assistance of experts from a variety of partnership organisations much progress has been made and Ireland’s Arts in Education Portal was launched on 19 May, in Dublin Castle.

Lifetime Lab

Lifetime Lab is a popular tourist attraction in Cork City at the site of the old city waterworks, where visitors can learn about different environmental topics including Energy, Waste and Water through a series of hands on exhibits and displays.

Lifetime Lab runs a highly successful Science Programme for Primary Schools developed from collaboration between Cork City Council and the Department of Education and Skills. An experienced teacher leads classes through activity based science workshops as well as delivering Primary Science summer courses for teachers. Lifetime Lab’s Primary Science Programme is supported by the Professional Development Service for Teachers, West Cork Education Centre and Cork Education Support Centre whose representatives serve on the programmes steering committee.

School groups from across West Cork regularly visit Lifetime Lab and participate in hands-on science workshops where they enjoy learning about energy, water, electricity and many other wonders of the science world. The primary science workshops focus on the skills, concept development and content objectives of the SESE curricula and are practically linked to classroom practice.

Lifetime Lab also partners with other organisations such as the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, Discover Science and Engineering and the Marine Institute to enable schools to access a wide range of other science and maths related workshops at Lifetime Lab.

See the Lifetime Lab website www.lifetimelab.ie for further details.

Circus and Fairground Education

Circus and Fairground families receive an education while on the move throughout the country.

This educational support scheme is funded by the DES and co-ordinated by the Limerick Education Centre. The network of Education Centres supports this work in their local areas.

A network of teachers, geographically spread around the country, is on call to come to the sites when requested by the parents. The teachers usually travel out after school and provide this tuition in the late afternoon.

West Cork Education Centre supports the Circus and Fairground Education Scheme and a number of teachers in the West Cork area are available to support these families when they visit West Cork.

For more information about this scheme, contact Mary O’Connor, National Co-ordinator for this scheme. Mary can be contacted by email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
